This position will start on August 1st, 2017. Position will end April 30th, 2018. This is a non-benefits eligible, part-time, hourly position.

Additional Information Purpose

To coordinate and teach nutrition, cooking, and gardening lessons at selected schools as part of the TX Sprouts National Institutes of Health grant, conducted by a Research Professor in the Department of Nutritional Sciences, School of Human Ecology.

Essential Functions

Prepare for and teach garden, cooking, and nutrition curriculum to 3-5th grade students during school hours in the various selected schools. Purchase ingredients/supplies for cooking portions of lessons. Manage a team of undergraduate assistants to help with classes. Teach lessons to parents of students. Complete process logs after every lesson taught outlining any deviations or omissions made to the content. Assist with other project related tasks, such as student enrollment for the Fall and evaluation of students for Fall and Spring. Perform data entry, planning and hosting of gardening and nutrition events, creating and disseminating promotional material for lessons, and organizing materials for lessons. Prepare garden builds and preparation in the spring, maintain school garden, and assist transition of garden sustainability towards program conclusion.

Marginal/Incidental functions

Other related functions as assigned.

Licenses: Class "C" Operator's Driver's License. Applicant selected must provide a current three year Driving Record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver's License within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident.

Required qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a nutrition, horticultural, public health, general science or related field. Two years of related experience. Experience in teaching children and families, particularly minority, low-income populations. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree. Proficiency in Spanish. Elementary Teacher Certification.

Must be willing and able to drive to selected schools across the Austin and surrounding area and teach classes during regular school hours and potentially in the evenings.

A criminal history background check will be required for finalist(s) under consideration for this position.

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas ( TRS ), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
